Breaking the Taboo: Why Men Need to Know About Menstruation and Being Period-Educated
In a country where women are revered as goddesses, why do stigmas surrounding menstruation persist? Despite vibrant celebrations of menstrual cycles in various Indian communities, there is a pressing need to combat taboos and myths surrounding periods. Menstrual awareness is crucial for all genders, as it affects families and relationships. Sensitization from a young age is essential, especially for men yet discussions about female anatomy are often deemed uncomfortable or inappropriate. However, by embracing change and fostering an inclusive society, we can create a nurturing environment where women thrive and men become steadfast allies. The future beckons us to make a difference today.
What is the Menstrual Cycle or Periods?
The menstrual Cycle is a natural process of blood flow that occurs in a woman’s body every month and even though Periods are a sign of a Healthy functioning of a Female Body it is still considered obnoxious and is typically met with expressions and words like “Yuck” and “Eeew”.
Which Hindu cultures celebrate Periods?
India is a country of rich heritage and culture where women are deemed to be goddesses. But to think about is, when did we fall so behind in our thinking? For example, in some south Indian communities, a girl’s first period is welcomed through a ceremony hosted by the family called “Ritushuddhi” and it is celebrated with the whole community. It celebrates the transition of a young girl to puberty or maturity.
In Odisha, a three-day-long festival called Raja Prabha is organized by women to celebrate Menstruation and Womanhood. In Tamil Nadu “Manjal Neerattu Vizhu” is celebrated for nine days with a turmeric bathing ceremony. Manjal Neerattu Vizha is celebrated by girls to acknowledge the onset of periods with beautiful sarees and gold jewelry. In Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra, West Bengal, and Gujarat, “Maasik Mahotsav” is celebrated to raise awareness about Menstruation. There are many more festivities celebrated across India on Menstrual Cycles.
But now in the same country, there are stigmas surrounding periods. It is important for us to work as a society against taboos and myths surrounding periods irrespective of gender.
Why do Men gravely need Menstrual Education?
Menstrual awareness is required not only amongst women but also amongst men because, in a lot of households around the world, men are considered to be the authority to look after a family i.e. “ The Man of the House”. A Man can be any male figure in a woman’s life, may it be her Father, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Husband, or Boyfriend but it is important that men are also sensitized about periods because periods can be very painful, and may cause mood swings or may even affect their daily activities. Men need to be respectful, understanding and should offer support to women during this time. By doing this men can help break down the stigma surrounding menstruation and create a more inclusive and supportive society for women.
The level of sensitization that is required needs to be ingrained from a young age in Children. Children are taught about every life function in school but very few institutions work towards enlightening them about Female Body. A lot of teachers find it uncomfortable to discuss female anatomy and consider such topics to be irrelevant to education. Even when a few teachers take up the responsibility, students giggle due to their immaturity and a lot of the time parents come up to teachers to tell them that they are “Ruining their child’s mind” and deem it as “Vulgar”. But everybody has to take a sincere step and play their respective parts towards the upliftment of young minds to eliminate the problem altogether.
Some readers might argue that it is easy for anyone to write a few facts on a blog and not consider how long and difficult this journey actually is. Truth be said, it is a long journey and it is a very difficult one but the phrase “Future is today” will be true, the day accept that we have to individually make changes in ourselves and in the society, sooner there is going to be a Nurturing environment for women around the world where they thrive in every situation in their life and make the best of opportunities offered to them while Men will be their biggest supporters rather than being the one’s belittling them.
